Our Holy Week activities began last Sunday with our Palm Sunday celebration. We hope that you will join us on Thursday, March 20th for our Maundy Thursday service at 7 pm in our Sanctuary. Our interns will be leading us in worship as we remember Christ’s last night with his disciples. We will contemplate Christ’s example of service and devotion as we pray and participate in hand washing. We will receive communion together as Jesus did with his closest followers and friends.
On Friday night, March 21st at 7 pm the Sanctuary Choir will sing “Requiem” by John Rutter. This beautiful work offers opportunity for us to contemplate Christ’s sacrifice for us and our relationship with him as people seeking forgiveness, redemption and hope. Join us on Easter Sunday morning as we celebrate together Christ’s resurrection.
Come and worship with us!

Some of you may have seen the new road signs on the side of LaVista and Briarcliff. Some of you may be visiting our website because you’ve seen the new signs. While there’s still more information to post about the upcoming workshops (as soon as I learn how to do all the fancy stuff that this website can do), I thought I’d post some information about it to get you interested.
So you want to know how to reduce your carbon footprint? Well, we want to know too! We’re offering a series of workshops beginning on Saturday, March 8th from 8:30-11:00 am in the fellowship hall. We’ll be going through the book written by David Gershon entitled, Low Carbon Diet. Follow-up workshops will be held on the following dates: March 22nd, April 12th, & April 26th. We’re asking that you contribute $10 towards the cost of your workbook. We’re also going to provide free breakfast and a community of support to help you through this journey to lose pounds (carbon pounds, that is).
We are asking that you’ll pre-register by calling the church office at 404-634-2463 and click Upcoming Events for more information.

January is a month of new beginnings & opportunities. Our resolutions usually include new commitments to healthy eating, working out, getting organized, etc. What about making a commitment about your spiritual growth for this new year? From January through March, our church emphasis is called Patterns of Faith. Our desire is to offer opportunities for you to learn, explore and practice new spiritual practices into your own personal faith journey. Here are some opportunities for you to be a part of:
- Each Sunday morning at 9:15 am, we will gather in the sanctuary for the celebration of the Eucharist (communion).
- Some in our community are reading and participating in a study using Richard Foster’s Celebration of Discipline book. It’s a great resource!
- Our first annual churchwide retreat will be held February 22nd-24th at Rock Eagle. Loyd Allen from the McAfee School of Theology will be leading in our gathering times. Jonathan and Susan Barlow will be working with our youth & children.
- Each Sunday, our worship services are planned around a theme of spiritual formation. This Sunday, January 13th will be on meditation.
We would love for you to come and explore these practices together with us!

Key word: Preparation
In the weeks before Christmas, we spend a great deal of time getting ready for the holidays. Houses are cleaned and decorated, trees are trimmed, parties are planned, invitations are sent, presents are purchased, groceries are bought, goodies are baked, suitcases are packed, Christmas cards are mailed (maybe); our ìto-doî lists are full!
While we shake our heads and sigh over the busy schedule, we continue the rituals, hopefully finding some joy and excitement as we give our time, energy, and resources getting ready to celebrate Christmas. For better or for worse, these things are part of our cultural preparation.
What about our spiritual preparation? One of the children asked this week, ìNow why do we celebrate Advent?î My answer was that it reminds us of how the Israelites waited for a Messiah, but thatís only part of the story. The other part is the preparation. The season of Advent is marked in worship by purple paraments, the same color we use for Lent. This is not a coincidence! The same penitence that marks the Lenten journey to the cross should characterize our preparation for Christmas. We take for granted the sacrifices we make in terms of time and money at this time of year ñ what sacrifices are we making for spiritual reasons?
Here are some things Iím aware of that are happening in our midst:
- People are seeking to simplify their Christmas by getting and giving less ìstuffî
- Some folks are giving to missions rather than spending that money elsewhere
- In response to our emphasis on Faith and the Environment, people are seeking environmentally friendly ways to observe their Christmas traditions
- To enhance our congregationís worship, the musicians of our church have been preparing for weeks to share the Christmas story through music
- To share the love of God, folks will be giving of their time to go caroling
- To spiritually prepare for the coming of the Messiah, people are more intentionally reading scripture, praying, and worshiping
These are just a few small ways we can focus on our spiritual preparation.
What will you do?
Come and join us this Advent,
Alicia

As I said in yesterdayís sermon, I have a pretty big footprint! My carbon footprint is rather large, I think. According to this website, if everyone on the earth lived as I lived we would need 5.8 earths to sustain us! So, this week Iím reducing my carbon footprint. What about you? How big is your footprint?
As our worship series on “Faith & the Environment” wraps up this Sunday, what have you learned about yourself, your faith & your impact on the environment? What changes have you made in your own personal life? I hope that as we anticipate the beginning of Advent in a few weeks, we’ll continue to challenge one another in our care for our earth.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Over the past few months, we at Peachtree Baptist Church have been working with Adam Walker Cleaveland of Cleave Design to do a total redesign of our website.
We hope you enjoy checking out our new site, and we will be continuing to add more content to it over the next few weeks.
