Moving On

Date January 26, 2009

Life is full of transitions. Yes, there are those natural progressions from infancy to childhood, from school to work, and from child to parent. However, for many in our community there are other transitions which are more challenging, and which call for help from one’s neighbors. Because we live in a city that is filled with people that are constantly on the move, we have special opportunities to be neighbors to these in need, to offer care and support to those who are indeed moving into new situations.

I hope that you will join with others in our community as we reach out to those in transition through two upcoming avenues:

First, on Saturday February 7th from 9 am – 3 pm, our church will be a host site for a community-wide Furniture Drive. In partnership with the Furniture Bank of Atlanta (http://www.furniturebankatlanta.org/), we will be collecting furniture and other items to help those who are moving out of homelessness, living with HIV/AIDS or fleeing domestic violence situations. For a list of items needed and not needed, please see “Upcoming Events”.

Another opportunity to serve those in transition will begin on Sunday, February 8th. This begins a new semester in our International Program’s English classes. These classes meet from 4-6 pm every Sunday for 10 weeks, helping students to grow in their practical communication skills. Volunteers are still needed to help teach or co-teach these classes. This has been a vital ministry in our neighborhood, especially to those who have recently moved to our country.

We all know that change is not easy. Let’s use the resources we have been given to help our neighbors in need.

Hope to see you soon,

Susan
